The study found that samples collected in 2006 from ponds located near residential septic systems were contaminated by pollutants including human hormones, such as estrone, progesterone, and androstenedione, and pharmaceuticals, such as carbamazepine (anti-convulsant), pentoxifylline (blood thinner), sulfamethoxazole (antibiotic), and trimethoprim (antibiotic). Ponds studied included three that were located in higher residential density areas (Lewis [Barnstable], Oyster [Falmouth], and Schoolhouse [Brewster]) and three located in lower residential density areas (Joshua [Barnstable], Flax [Dennis], and Flax [Brewster]). Levels of estrogenic hormones approached those found to induce physiological changes in male fish. Results were published in Environment Toxicology and Chemistry (Web publication July 10,2008 and print publication November 2008) and can be found online at http://www.silentspring.org/pdf/our_publications/Standley_08ETAC.pdf</pre></dd></dl><dt><span class="element">Purpose</span></dt><dl><dd><pre class="wrap">To inform the general public about the contamination of groundwater and ponds on Cape Cod by hormones and pharmaceuticals.</pre></dd></dl></dl></dd><dt><span class="element">Time Period of Content</span></dt><dd><dl><dt><span class="element">Time Period Information</span></dt><dd><dl><dt><span class="element">Single Date/Time</span></dt><dd><dl><dt><span class="element">Calendar Date</span> 21 November 2007</dt></dl></dd></dl></dd></dl></dd><dt><span class="element">Status</span></dt><dd><dl><dt><span class="element">Progress</span> Completed</dt><dt><span class="element">Maintenance and Update Frequency</span> Not planned.</dt></dl></dd><br /><dt><span class="element">Spatial Domain</span></dt><dd><dl><dt><span class="element">Bounding Coordinates</span></dt><dd><dl><dt><span class="element">West Bounding Coordinate</span> -70.638553</dt><dt><span class="element">East Bounding Coordinate</span> -70.026111</dt><dt><span class="element">North Bounding Coordinate</span> 41.773125</dt><dt><span class="element">South Bounding Coordinate</span> 41.534785</dt></dl></dd></dl></dd><br /><dt><span class="element">Access Constraints</span></dt><dl><dd><pre class="wrap">None</pre></dd></dl><dt><span class="element">Use Constraints</span></dt><dl><dd><pre class="wrap">These values represent arithmetic means of mid-column (e.g. half depth to bottom) grab samples of water collected from the pond during a one year period (2006) and do not reflect overall pond concentrations or year to year variations.</pre></dd></dl><dt><span class="element">Point of Contact</span></dt><dd><dl><dt><span class="element">Contact Information</span></dt><dd><dl><dt><span class="element">Contact Person Primary</span></dt><dd><dl><dt><span class="element">Contact Person</span> Kathleen Attfield</dt><dt><span class="element">Contact Organization</span> Silent Spring Institute</dt></dl></dd><dt><span class="element">Contact Address</span></dt><dd><dl><dt><span class="element">Address</span> 29 Crafts Street</dt><dt><span class="element">City</span> Newton</dt><dt><span class="element">State or Province</span> MA</dt><dt><span class="element">Postal Code</span> 02458</dt><dt><span class="element">Country</span> UNITED STATES</dt></dl></dd><br /><dt><span class="element">Contact Voice Telephone</span> 617.332.4288</dt><dt><span class="element">Contact Facsimile Telephone</span> 617.332.4284</dt></dl></dd><br /></dl></dd><dt><span class="element">Native Data Set Environment</span></dt><dd>Microsoft Windows XP Version 5.1 (Build 2600) Service Pack 2; ESRI ArcCatalog 9.3.0.1770</dd></dl></dd></dl><br /><div class="backToTop"><a onclick="hideShow('ID0ETA')" href="#ID0ETA">Hide ²%</a></div></div><h2 class="fgdc"><a onclick="hideShow('ID0ENA')" href="#ID0ENA">Data Quality  <span id="ID0ENAShow" class="show">¼%</span><span id="ID0ENAHide" class="hide">º%</span></a></h2><div class="hide" id="ID0ENA"><dl><dd><dl><dt><span class="element">Lineage</span></dt><dd><dl><dt><span class="element">Source Information</span></dt><dd><dl><dt><span class="element">Source Citation</span></dt><dd><dl><dt><span class="element">Citation Information</span></dt><dd><dl><dt><span class="element">Originator</span> Silent Spring Institute: Laurel J.
