Cape Cod Breast Cancer and the Environment Atlas
Silent Spring Institute researchers have compiled information about
breast cancer and the Cape Cod environment as part of the Cape Cod
Breast Cancer and Environment Study (Cape Cod Study).
Expanding on the extensive geographic data resources of MassGIS and the Cape
Cod Commission, Silent Spring Institute, working with Applied Geographics,
Inc. (AGI), developed an innovative geographic information system (GIS). The
GIS is a central data management and analysis tool in the Cape Cod Study. By
mapping data in the GIS, researchers are able to look for patterns and regional
differences in breast cancer incidence and environmental features. The Silent
Spring Institute GIS is the first to integrate current and historical information
on the Cape environment for use in health studies.
Creation of this atlas was funded by a grant from The Dolphin Trust. Updating
and maintenance of this atlas are supported through a grant from the Jesse
and Juanita Grimes Fund for Humanitarian Services at the Community Foundation
of Cape Cod. The Cape Cod Breast Cancer and Environment Study is supported
with funds appropriated by the Massachusetts legislature and administered by
the Massachusetts Department of Public Health. |
