The Electronic Atlas of the Cape Cod Environment is not only a collection of maps, but also a compilation of imagery and photos that illustrate some important characteristics of the Cape Cod environment. Included are descriptions of some of the problems of this unique piece of land - land created thousands of years ago by glaciers, and continuously sculpted since then by the sea, the wind, and now by human influence.

The Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (WBNERR) is located on the south shore of Cape Cod, Massachusetts in the towns of Falmouth and Mashpee. It encompasses some 3,000 acres of open waters, barrier beaches, marshlands and uplands. The Waquoit Bay Reserve provides long-term protection to the habitat and resources of this representative estuarine ecosystem, which serves as a natural laboratory for research by the Reserve and others that advances our understanding of natural estuarine and watershed-linked processes and human influences on them.

As a branch of the U.S. Department of the Interior, the U.S. Geological Survey provides water resources in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. This branch covers local issues on water resources and water quality on state rivers, lakes, and drainage basins to ensure that resident health and the environment remains sustainable.

The USGS Cape Cod Toxic Substances Hydrology Research Site is located on western Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The source of contamination is the now-decommissioned sewage treatment plant on the Massachusetts Military Reservation. The sewage plume on Cape Cod will be used as a field laboratory by a team of government and university scientists to examine the processes that affect toxic chemicals in ground water. This plume is caused by disposal of treated sewage to the sand and gravel aquifer beneath the reservation.

Cape Cod Air Force Station (AFS) is the home of the 6th Space Warning Squadron (SWS). The installation occupies approximately 100 acres of land on Flat Rock Hill in the northeastern portion of the Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR) on upper Cape Cod. The U.S. military operates an extensive early warning network consisting of ground-based radars and space-based sensors in order to detect intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM) and sea-launched ballistic missile (SLBM) raids against the United States and Canada. Part of this early warning network includes two PAVE PAWS (Phased-Array Warning System) sites at Beale Air Force Base (AFB), California, and Cape Cod Air Force Station (AFS), Massachusetts.

Massachusetts Military Reservation (MMR), a military training facility, is located on the upper western portion of Cape Cod, immediately south of the Cape Cod Canal in Barnstable County, Massachusetts. It includes parts of the towns of Bourne, Mashpee, and Sandwich and abuts the town of Falmouth. There are currently 15 known groundwater plumes originating from MMR that affect the health and livelihood of the residents in this area.
